Make a fitting muslin

Whenever you plan to use a jacket or vest pattern you've never used before, check the fit by making the garment out of muslin (or some other inexpensive fabric) first.  You'll be able to see where adjustments need to be made before cutting into your good fabric.  Shop the end-of-the-year sales to find fabric deals!  Look for fabric with a drape similar to the one you want to use.
