I was once told that you can tell an American-made striped tie from a European-made striped tie by the direction of the stripes.  I'm not sure this is true, but you can do interesting things with striped ties.  My father-in-law had stripes of both directions in his closet when he died and the handbag I made with them has an almost herringbone look.
