I can't emphasize enough the value of measuring pattern pieces and your own body when preparing to make a garment.  I learned this many years ago when I made myself a pair of black/white hound's-tooth pants, only to discover when I finished that they didn't fit!  After many tears, I ended up giving them to a neighbor.  So...know your own measurements AND the actual measurements of your pattern to be sure you are making the correct size.
