Choosing your cutting tool

Before you cut out a garment, it is helpful to know how you plan to finish the seams.  If all raw edges will be enclosed or hidden, you can cut with a straight blade.  If seam allowances will be exposed (such as a blouse or skirt), you may prefer to cut with a pinking blade.  However, if you plan to serge finish raw edges, than a straight blade is again appropriate.  A good pair of pinking shears is a useful tool for your cutting supplies.
