Finishing a hem

When hemming a garment, the raw edge needs to be finished in some way.  For a lightweight fabric, you could turn the raw edge under 1/4" and stitch.  A smoother finish results when you serge the raw edge.  If you don't have a serger, you can sew hem tape on the hem edge to cover the raw edges, then hand sew to finish.  This last is especially nice on bulkier fabrics, like a quilted garment.
