Before you cut

Before you cut into that beautiful fabric you bought for a new garment, make sure your pattern is sized correctly for YOU.  This means you must measure your body at bust (widest part), waist, and hip (widest part).  The garment measurements are often provided, but if not you will need to measure the pieces at those spots and add the measurements together (subtracting seam allowances).  There should be at least 2-4" ease in most cases for your garment to move with you.
