Pieces from recycled silk ties will be more durable if they are interfaced before use.  If you are planning a project that will see a lot of use, consider using a light-weight fusible interfacing (or underlining) on the pieces either before cutting, or on the complete unit after construction.  You will not have a problem with fraying edges or seams this way.
