When I use ties in clothing, I often like to select one tie as the inspiration for colors, design, and/or embellishments.  A recent project had 2 inspirations - one for colors (based on silk dupioni fabrics in my stash), and another for the appliques.  Other ties were then selected that shared the colors in both the inspiration ties.
