Adding a bit of shaping

You can add a bit of shaping to any simple jacket or shirt pattern at the side seams.  With a paper pattern, pin the front and back together at the shoulder and side, and drape over your shoulder to check waist placement.  Mark that spot, unpin and mark a 1" vertical line 1/2" inside the cutting line at the waist.  Taper from the line to meet the original cutting line about 3" - 4" above and below your mark.
