If you are planning a recycled necktie project, be sure that you are starting with clean ties.  If you know the ties have been dry-cleaned or are not dirty, you may not have to prewash them.  However, if you ever plan to wash the finished product, you should wash the ties with a dye fixative (such as Retayne) before using.
