I find better results when I sew on fine silk (or polyester) neckties with a fine thread, such as YLI's Soft Touch cotton , or a fine polyester thread like Wonderfil's Invisafil or Superior's Bottomline, or a fine silk.  The finer thread will sink into the fabric and you'll have a smoother end product.
