I am occasionally given a tie that is frayed at the folded edges.  If it survives the washing machine, I use the unfrayed parts after stabilizing them with a very light-weight fusible interfacing/underlining.  I've mentioned this before, but my preferred product is HTC's Touch O' Gold II.  It's available in white & black.
